The Lawrence Times — a young but rapidly growing startup online publication covering Lawrence and Douglas County, Kansas — is looking for journalists to join our team, help us tell this community’s stories, and revolutionize local news.

This is true community reporting. We’re entirely locally owned and operated with no ties to any corporations. We have no paywall on our website because we believe income should not limit our neighbors’ access to the critical information we’re publishing. We are supported through advertising from local businesses and voluntary subscriptions of community members who believe in what we’re doing and want to see us grow.

We value people over profit. That, of course, extends to our staff — we want to pay reporters well, allow people who work with us to pursue passion projects, and ensure a healthy work-life balance. We believe the old ways are broken, and we can do it better. Together.

Ideal candidates will have news writing and photography experience, handle traditional inverted pyramid-style articles quickly and accurately, and write features that move readers. We especially want those who will dig deep to shine a light on the bigger issues, with an emphasis on the problems that disproportionately affect marginalized people.

Some experience with investigative reporting is much preferred but not essential. Any other skills you can brag about are great — if you have video skills, graphic design talent, social media expertise, web design knowledge, etc., that’s awesome. Show us.

We don’t have an office, so work will be remote, but reporters should live in or near the Lawrence area. You’ll need to be able to get around town to cover breaking news, meet with sources, cover events in person, etc.

What do we mean by the strong possibility of full-time employment for “those who are good fits”?

We want reporters who feel journalism in their bones and care deeply about the quality of their work. You can’t fake natural curiosity and passion, and we can’t read it from your résumé. We want to build a dream team of reporters who can give the people of Lawrence the excellent news coverage they deserve. We won’t drag our feet when the right person joins our team.

We’ll start serious review of applicants on Monday, Nov. 22. We’ll continue reviewing through Friday, Dec. 17, but if we find strong candidates, we could start filling positions much sooner, so those who are very interested should please apply as soon as possible.
